Community Perception on Groundwater Quality Versus Analytical Quality in the Coastal Areas of Visakhapatnam, India—Opinion Versus Actuality

With an aim to estimate the quality of ground water and perception of public towards it, a case study was conducted in the selected areas of Visakhapatnam, India. For this study, thirty ground water samples from different locations of coastal Visakhapatnam region (East coast, India) were collected and different physico-chemical parameters of the collected samples were measured. Analysis of the data showed that in all the samples, certain parameters exceeded the tolerable levels set by WHO guidelines for potable water. The study disclosed that total dissolved solids, chlorides, calcium, sodium and hardness were the major parameters and were the predominant contaminants in the sample areas, which crossed the set limits. The high amounts of Cl−(187 mg/L), Ca2+ (134 mg/L), NO3−(15.27 mg/L), Na+ (232 mg/L) and TDS (1706 mg/L) were observed in S10, S2, S5, S22 and S5 among thirty samples, respectively. In conjunction with the water quality analysis study, a survey regarding the public perception on the ground water quality they regularly use was also conducted. The survey has emancipated that over 96% of people are not satisfied with the quality of available ground water. The analytical report of samples has become an evidential proof and in agreement with the people’s conception. The case study is a whistle blower to alert the authorities to take initiatives to curb the health hazards associated with contaminated ground water in those areas.
