A Case Study of Solar Photovoltaic and Biomass-Based Hybrid Power System in Educational Institutes in Delhi-NCR

This paper proposes a hybrid power system using only renewable energy resources, i.e., solar photovoltaic (PV) and biomass. Rooftop PV systems reduce the space requirement and so the overall cost. Anaerobic digestion of biomass like animal waste gives biogas which can be purified and fed to Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs). This digested slurry is rich in nutrients and is useful for agriculture applications which add to the system’s economic value. A case study is done proposing such a hybrid power system in Faridabad, India. For solar PV systems, an educational institute is considered, and the available area gives scope of 19 MWp PV system which is obtained from simulation on PVSYST software. PV system produces 31,832 MWh energy and reduces 30.2 * 106 kg CO2 annually, and invested amount is recovered in less than seven years. For the success of the biomass system, a manual survey is done in nearby 36 villages for efficient collection of animal and poultry waste. About 597.64 MT of biomass is collected daily which gives 37,520 Nm3 of biogas which is fed to SOFC. SOFC system is simulated in Homer software; 47,069 MWh energy is produced, 41.1 * 106 kg CO2 is reduced annually, and simple payback period is 1.2 years. Proposed system uses biogas storage for consistent supply, SOFC for power generation against conventional diesel gensets is economically and environmentally feasible, and it can serve as reference for educational institutes and rural areas.
