Experimental Investigation into the Laser Processing of White Pat Silk Fabric

Laser cutting is a versatile, non-contact manufacturing process that employs a laser beam to process materials without direct contact. This makes it ideal for delicate and thin fabrics like Assamese silk. This paper presents the feasibility of laser cutting for Assamese white pat silk fabric of 0.2 mm thickness. The primary objective of executing the research work is to examine the interaction of laser with the white pat silk fabric as still limited data is available in the literature. The experiments were conducted using a 90 W CO2 laser machine and varying two process parameters: laser power and scanning speed. The results showed that laser power of 10 W resulted in better dimensional accuracy and edge quality due to the reduced heat energy of the laser. Laser power higher than 10 W increases the amount of heat energy transferred to the fabric, thereby resulting in a higher burning effect reducing the accuracy and edge quality.
