Investigation of Joint Properties of Friction Stir Welded 316L Stainless Steel Pipes

The aim of this investigation is to understand the effect of tool rotational speed at a fixed welding speed on 316L stainless steel pipe joints by friction stir welding (FSW). FSW has been carried out to join 6.75 mm thick pipes of inner diameter of 267 mm. The microstructure of different zones was investigated by optical microscopy and correlated with their hardness. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) has been conducted to identify the composition on the surface of the weldment. Fine equiaxed grains are observed in the stir zone that is formed due to the mechanism of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. The resulting hardness values revealed that in the stir zone, the value is maximum, i.e., 233 HV at the tool rotational speed of 300 rpm. The tensile strength of the joint is also reported.
