Microstructural Investigation of Laser Engraving of Jalore Pink Granite

Novel rock-breaking technologies are ardently needed in applications such as petroleum, mining, tunneling, boring, rail line construction, and roadways for faster advancements and economic viability. Laser-based rock-breaking possesses incredible characteristics and is a potential answer to this need. Limited by the power transmission and material variability, researchers are exploring laser engraving of rocks at a laboratory scale to analyze vital process parameters and develop prototypes and extrapolating models. In this work, laser engraving is performed on a cuboidal block of Jalore pink granite, and the microstructural results of the rock melting mechanism are reported. A close microscopic observation of the laser-rock interaction mechanism reveals a novel process of rock melting and texture and contrast-based cratering due to laser heat transfer. The same is discussed in detail, and future exploration possibilities have also been presented.
