COVID-19 caused up to 52.000 extraordinary movement restrictions worldwide, affecting all migrant worker communities, including truck drivers on East Africa's Northern Corridor. Though disruptive, COVID-19 offered a unique opportunity to objectively re-assess and fix the problems bedeviling the transport and logistics sector in East Africa, and to update this system in a way that ensures that the most important, yet weakest link—truck drivers, are protected, while ensuring pandemics are not imported alongside the essential goods they deliver. This paper aims to review COVID-19 statistics among truck drivers transiting the Northern Corridor, and to outline bottlenecks pandemic countermeasures may have faced, to inform future infection and prevention control measures. Raw data used is drawn from reports by the Ministries of Health of various East African countries and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
