Wounds from injuries and surgeries need to be dressed to prevent loss of blood and infections. Wound management poses a challenge to facilitate dressing that does not just provide a cover but initiate wound healing. It, thus, is a huge burden on the governments of all nations. The conventional dressings have been successful in creating an inert environment and forming a cover to protect the wound; however, since they lack any bioactivity, there are no healing properties imparted. Besides, abnormal wounds such as those irregularly shaped are poorly controlled by conventional methods. The advent of smart and responsive materials helps in sensing the wound condition and react to initiate a healing process. These materials can further be functionalized to cater to the needs of specific cases. This review summarizes the materials used for haemostasis and those that are stimuli-responsive and foster native healing processes.
