Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety Analysis: A Case Study of Intercity Train Bogie System

This research study focused on key aspects of rolling stock maintenance, specifically focusing on the bogie system in intercity trains in Malaysia. The primary aim was to assess the impact of maintenance practices on rolling stock through a comprehensive evaluation of failures and methodological equipment within the train system. The study utilized operational data from one of the intercity rail operators, providing detailed information on failure and maintenance log. By analyzing operational data, the research explored maintenance and utilization patterns to identify and understand failure instances in intercity train rolling stock. To address primary failure causes, a specialized railway maintenance assessment approach was introduced and implemented. The study employed quantitative methods for a systematic analysis of the system’s maintainability, emphasizing Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) measures. Additionally, the research investigated events and incidents resulting from system failures to comprehend their consequential impact. Following the identification of equipment with the highest failure rates, RAMS measures were applied to evaluate the system’s reliability, availability, and maintainability. The primary goal of the project was to improve failure detection and formulate optimal maintenance plans to mitigate equipment failures in intercity rolling stock. A significant outcome was the implementation of an enhanced maintenance plan, contributing significantly to the operational efficiency of train services and the overall advancement of railway transportation. By systematically addressing crucial issues related to equipment failures and proposing tailored maintenance strategies, this investigation aimed to enhance the reliability and performance standards of rolling stock in the Malaysian intercity train system, with a specific focus on the pivotal role played by the bogie system.
