In the past decade, there has been steady development with technologies that blend digital and physical realms, namely virtual and augmented reality. The uses of immersive virtual reality in reconstructing digital heritage are evolving, which helps in preserving cultural and architectural monuments. In this paper, the study area is developed as a virtual reality platform with interactive information overlay. The workflow described in the paper will be demonstrated with the study of the 200-year-old Panduranga Vitthal temple, Kandi village, near Hyderabad. It is unusual for a Maratha-origin temple to be found in the Telugu region, but this temple is an example of the movement and influence of culture on the neighboring state. The uniqueness of this temple complex, built in stone and brick using intricate wooden details, a stepwell, and a connecting pond, allowed for capturing it using photogrammetry. Photogrammetry makes it possible to create a VR experience that enables the user to explore the place. We propose a workflow of creating immersive virtual reality models using digital and 3D data generated using photogrammetry. Emphasis is given to the simplification of the high-detail photogrammetry model to a smaller optimized mesh model with texture and normal maps, which is small enough from real-time rendering. Creating a virtual experience design helps the user to engage with space without endangering the heritage structure, record and document it in its present form, and make it accessible for people to view from anywhere with relevant, interactive information overlay.
