Study of Tensile Strength of Bamboo as Replacement for Steel in Reinforced Concrete Members
摘要
In this study, trials have been made for the use of bamboo as a replacement for reinforced concrete members which is simple, efficient, sustainable, and economical for rural constructions. The important aspect of steel used in concrete is tensile strength therefore in this study, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of split bamboo were found. Bamboo was locally procured, in Gujarat D. strictus type of bamboo is available. A tensile test was performed in a universal testing machine along with a mechanical strain gauge to measure the strain in the bamboo specimen. The main drawback in bamboo while performing tensile tests is slippage during the test because of its smooth surface therefore gripping arrangements were made such that only load was transferred through grips to bamboo specimens without any slippage. Overall six specimens were tested for direct tension test, The modulus of elasticity was found to be in the range specified in IS 15912:2018 for the use of bamboo as reinforcement. Out of six specimens, the ultimate tensile strength was found to be 110 \(\frac{{\text{N}}}{{{\text{mm}}^{2} }}\) .
