Three alternative cinema films, Padatik/The Guerilla Fighter (Mrinal Sen, 1973), Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa/Mother of 1084 (Govind Nihalani, 1998), and Tiladaanam/The Rite…A Passion (K.N.T Sastry, 2002), are the springboard to explore India’s Naxalite insurgency’s origins, in sync with the “long 1960s” global radicalism committed to revolutionary change. The 60 s’ obverse, the contemporary moment of India’s right-wing extremism is uncannily again in sync with its global intensification in the new millennium. These films present an opportunity to explore the Naxalite movement’s rich legacy and their cautionary tale about the teleology of state repression in realpolitik.

摘要
