The social influence of Indian Cinema stretches beyond mere entertainment to become a pivotal force in shaping societal dialogues on critical issues such as the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Historically reflective and at times transformative, Indian films have begun addressing the nuances of these rights, with movies like “Pink” and “Article 15” catalyzing national conversations on consent and caste discrimination. The depiction of the LGBTQIA+ community has evolved, especially since the Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to decriminalize homosexuality, progressing from stereotypes to more layered portrayals. However, the recent judgment of the Supreme Court in “Supriyo v. Union of India judgment,” denying conjugal rights to the queer community in India, has underscored the urgency for more accurate representation in cinema. This representation could significantly educate and shift societal awareness and attitudes towards the basic Human rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Indian cinema, therefore, not only reflects but also participates in the cultural and legal journey towards inclusivity and empathy, marking its role as a conduit for social change and reflection.
