Utilization of Waste Material as a Filler Material in Stone Column: A Review

In these modern eras, there are difficulties in recycling solid waste materials. Solid waste is typically disposed of near industries, necessitating land and posing challenges such as slope stability. This solid waste might be utilized in stone columns as a filler material, which is crucial in bearing the loads exerted by structures. Past research studies were conducted with the aim of enhancing the strength of weak soils using different granular solid waste materials. Establishing a stone column not only enhances the soil load-carrying capacity but also expedites the consolidation effect, decreases the compressible nature of soft, loose, fine-grained soils, and mitigates the risk of soil liquefaction. Natural stone aggregates are typically used as a primary material for filling the stone columns. This review paper aims to explore past research on the utilization of various waste materials, such as tire chips, railway ballast, steel slag, brick, marble waste, etc., as granular fillers in stone columns with partial or full replacement of natural stone aggregates. It is observed that the majority of the previous research is based on numerical analysis or small-scale physical model tests that compare non-encased and encased stone columns by varying different factors such as proportions and size of filler material, diameter, depth of stone column, etc. By comparing all waste materials used as filler material in the stone column, it is found that railway ballast and steel slag are the most effective alternatives for regular natural stone aggregate as stone column filler material.
