Recent Developments in Metal Recovery Through Microbial Mediated Phytomining: An Emphasis on Copper Recovery from Mine Tailings

In the present scenario, zero waste technology is a need for any metal processing industry. Phytomining is the technique of extracting heavy metals from the soil through hyper-accumulators, whether occurring naturally or induced artificially in the environment. In large quantities, valuable metal such as copper is found in the tailings dump of copper mines and around the copper industrial wastes. The copper recovery using conventional technology from these wastes is not cost-effective or preferable. Due to the continuous leaching of these wastes, water, and soil are contaminated and appear as a huge risk to the ecosystem. Phytomining emerged as a sustainable approach to the recovery of copper with validation from different scientific groups. In this review, the different plant species have been studied in the phytoextraction of the metal in the field and laboratory conditions. The effect of different plant growth-promoting bacteria in the accumulation of copper in the plant species was studied along with the analysis of the economic phytomining model and numerical modeling for the recovery of copper and other metals. The study also reflects different copper-contaminated places in India.
