A Review on Challenges in Developing the Military Uniforms
摘要
Military uniforms are characterised by unique designs and colours that represent their country or branch of service, making them an essential component of modern-day warfare. The military forces carry out a wide range of activities, such as running, jumping, climbing, falling, and crawling, during the defence and physical training in different environmental conditions, which demands uniforms that provide high serviceability and comfort. Along with these properties and according to MIL standards, the designed military uniform has to be lightweight. With advancements in fields, the armed forces are demanding camouflage patterns in different terrains to protect themselves from their preys. As military personnel fight and survive in different environmental conditions (fire, heat, cold, wind, and rain) it is very important for them to protect themselves from these conditions by wearing uniforms that have protective finishes. Designing military uniforms with all these combined requirements is a very challenging task, as the requirements for camouflaging/dyeing can have an adverse impact on the tear strength and overall durability of the materials. On the other hand, improvement in the durability of clothing material through structural modification can lead to heat stress and can also affect mechanical comfort during military activity. In order to maintain all these requirements in the combined proportions, the adequate selection of materials and the manufacturing technique is a crucial process. This review article provides an overview of the mechanical and comfort behaviour of military uniforms. The contribution of all the factors toward the mechanical and comfort properties, the current trends, and advancements in the field of military uniform design and development are also discussed, including the use of advanced materials, such as high strength fibres, to improve durability and functionality. The importance of military uniform design, including comfort, is also highlighted.
