Wastewater generated from the electroplating industry, loaded with oil and/or heavy metals including potential toxicity, is harmful to the environment if discharged without treatment. Membrane filtration is highly promising for removing oil and heavy metals due to its stability and durability, easy processing, and low maintenance cost as well as its advantages of energy efficiency. Two types of wastewater can be produced from the electroplating industry viz. Oily wastewater is contaminated with heavy metals and wastewater is contaminated with heavy metals. In this chapter, the performance of membrane processes for the treatment of both types of electroplating wastewater was addressed using commercialized ceramic membranes and low-cost ceramic membranes from natural low-cost starting materials. Overall data suggest that the developed ceramic membranes have the potential for remediation of electroplating wastewater contaminated by oil and heavy metals.
