Separation of Toxic Ions Using Low-Cost Ceramic UF Membrane

Due to the exponential growth of the population, demand for safe water is increasing. Urbaion returned polluted water with various contaminants like toxic metal ions. This results in health hazards to all living beings and hence needs to be treated from freshwater resources. Among various water treatment techniques, membrane separation is one of the advance technologies. In the past few decades, ceramic membranes have proved several advantages over polymeric in terms of mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. This chapter elaborates on ceramic membrane technology for the separation of toxic metal ions from wastewater. The main focus is given on the recent development of ceramic ultrafiltration membrane (UF), its synthesis along with performance evaluation. Recent trends, challenges and advances in the preparation of nanoparticle-incorporated ceramic UF membrane for the removal of metal ion are also discussed herein. Nanoparticles like copper oxide (CuO) and hydroxyapatite-based low-cost ceramic UF membrane synthesis, characterization and performance evaluation are particularly included in this chapter.
