This paper aims to identify the impact of emerging technologies such as digital twins and metaverse within smart factory departments. The central departments related to both production and the operation of the entire factory are considered. More specifically, we want to classify technologies according to the needs of these departments and identify those functionalities that would aim to optimize production and workflow. Digital twins and Metaverse, in general, can be used in several distinct situations, such as monitoring and prediction, simulation, replication, training, management, and social networking. The paper also describes how enterprise resource planning, manufacturing execution systems, and product lifecycle management systems help generate the information needed to implement metaverse solutions in a smart factory.
