As reform of China’s power system deepens, the constituent elements of “generation, transmission, distribution, and sale” have started to become unlinked, and power generation enterprises will have to face up to harsher market competition. Unlike other provinces, hydropower in Sichuan accounts for 80% of the total, and due to various causes, including difficulties with the delivery channel, water spillage losses are a serious problem during flood season. Couple that with the great uncertainty regarding water inflows inherent to hydropower, a strong upstream and downstream correlation, and low variable cost in power generation, then market competition is even more intense. In these circumstances, how can power generation across the multiple power stations of the watershed be made safe, efficient, and smartly cooperative? How can the ideal power generation targets be obtained in the midst of power market trade? How can economical operation of cascade power stations be achieved? In response to these questions, the Dadu River Company has been actively engaging in exploration and practice revolving around intelligent power dispatch.
