Symbolic framework is one of the learning frameworks based on symbol system and its symbolic logic. We first overview symbolism, symbolic learning theory, physical symbol systems, and GOFAI. Second, we discuss formal logic consisting of symbolic logic and mathematical logic. Next, we explain logic learning, especially logic learning theory, the logical learning modes, and logic programming methods, where the logical learning modes consist of deductive learning, inductive learning, and abductive learning. We then introduce rule learning represented by association rules, including association rules discovery and synthesis. After that, we learn causal learning, specifically causal relations, causal inference, and two approaches to causal learning. After reviewing Moravec’s paradox, thinking fast and slow, we finally introduce some approaches of neuro-symbolic learning that emerged in recent years.
