Genetics of Tiller Development in Rice

Rice has been accepted as a model system for genomic studies of cereal crops. The genetic basis of shoot branching has received increased attention because of the agronomic importance of tillers for grain yield. Genes affecting tiller development also influence panicle architecture and thereby grain number. Several genetic mutants for tillering have been identified. The genes responsible for tiller number are expressed during apical and axillary meristem initiation. Often, they work in combination with hormones, which control tissue differentiation and exaggeration of new buds. In the last decade, several genes controlling tiller number have been identified in rice, such as MOC1, TAD1, MIP1, LAX1, LAX2, OsPIN1, TLD1, OsIPT1, OsGA2ox, OsTB1, etc. Environmental factors overwhelm the genotypic permissibility of rice tillering.
