The fallopian tube is a tubular structure comprised of an outer muscularis layer and an inner mucosal plica epithelialized by ciliated columnar cells, secretory cells, and intercalated cells. Embryologically derived from the mullerian ducts, the fallopian tubal epithelium expresses mullerian markers PAX8 and WT1. The most common benign disorders of the fallopian tubes are inflammatory salpingitis secondary to sexually transmitted disease, ectopic pregnancy, and endometriosis. Benign primary tumors of fallopian tubes are common and include paratubal cysts, serous cystadenofibroma, and adenomatoid tumor. Incidental findings are increasingly identified, paralleling the growing evaluation of specimens from routine surgeries and risk-reducing salpingectomies.
