Philology has a long history as a study. The word “literature” appeared in the Analects • Ba Yi in the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period. Later, scholars in successive dynasties, such as Zheng Xuan and Ma Duanlin, conducted various studies and interpretations of the word “document.” Liang Qichao mentioned philology for the first time in the Introduction to Qing Dynasty Scholarship in 1920. In 1930, the Outline of Chinese Philology by Zheng Hesheng and Zheng Hechun was the first work directly named after “philology.”
