The Restoration and Reconstruction of Sociology
摘要
Chinese sociologists generally believe that in March 1979, the establishment of the Chinese Sociological Research Association (CSRA) signaled the restoration and reconstruction of sociology as an academic discipline in China. In his article The Restoration and Reconstruction of Chinese Sociology, Yang Xinheng said: “Between 15th and 18th March 1979, there were ‘Meetings on Sociology’ in Beijing. Marxist theorist Hu Qiaomu delivered an important speech. He said, ‘It is wrong—from a scientific and a political perspective—to deny sociology as a science. It is rude to prohibit its existence and development and preventing it from being taught goes against the fundamental principles of socialism’” (Yang 2015). At the time, Mr. Hu was President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and so his remarks helped restore the good name of sociology that was abolished in China in 1952 (Gao and Sun 2008). During the meetings, Draft Regulations on the Work of the China Sociological Research Association were passed. A 50-member council was elected, led by Fei Xiaotong. Tian Rukang, Chen Dao, Du Renzhi, Li Zhengwen, Luo Qing, Lin Yaohua, and Lei Jieqiong were elected as vice presidents, and Yu Guangyuan, Chen Hansheng, Wu Wenzao, Wu Zelin, and Li Jinghan were appointed as advisors. The CSRA was officially founded. Yang Xinheng said in his article: “On March 19, the Overseas Edition of People’s Daily reported the news. Overseas sociologists were thrilled, especially Chinese ones. They went around spreading the good news” (Yang 2015).
