The purpose of this study is to investigate the critical role of digital communication etiquette among Generation Z (Gen-Z) university students in the setting of a smart city, with a specific focus on Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ) in Bintaro Jaya, Indonesia. As digital natives, Gen-Z actively engages with smart city technology, routinely communicating via social media and instant messaging systems. They switch between personal and professional communication with ease, exhibiting their versatility and efficiency. The proliferation of digital multitasking, on the other hand, raises worries about its impact on focus and engagement. Through survey and interview, the 204 respondents indicated their priority on digital communication speed and efficiency, emphasising the need of real-time information and quick responses. The frequent use of emoticons and emojis demonstrates their propensity for emotional expressiveness and clarity in digital interactions. Politeness is widely appreciated in digital communication, with the majority of respondents placing a high value on it. Understanding and accommodating Gen-Z’s digital communication norms and preferences is critical for educational institutions, companies, and technology developers interested in fostering meaningful connections in smart cities. This study gives insight on the behaviours and views of Gen-Z, who are defining the future of digital communication in smart city settings.

摘要
