This research paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of free, open-source desktop-based DICOM software's, aiming to serve as an important resource for researchers and medical practitioners seeking suitable DICOM viewers for research and medical interventions. Considering increasing demands and the future of medical diagnosis, the need for an efficient DICOM viewer that manipulates the DICOM image modalities in multi-dimensions has gained significant attention in the medical field. Discovering an optimal DICOM viewer for the different image manipulation operation significant challenge with limited research dedicated to evaluating publicly accessible desktop software’s. This evaluation study considers key performance assessment criterion such as image manipulation functionalities, user interface, performance, platform compatibility, and community support. Through a non-systematic search, 79 free open-source DICOM viewers were chosen for evaluation, with only six making the final shortlist. The insights gained from this work aim to enhance the understanding of underlying capabilities and limitations of different DICOM viewers, facilitating researchers, medical practitioners, and imaging professionals in selecting the most suitable open-source DICOM viewer that aligns with their specific needs, enabling them to efficiently utilize it.
