It is very crucial to measure the strength of any infrastructure to prevent casualties due to the collapse of the structure. Concrete is one of the main elements in construction. Structural engineers want to use concrete that reaches high strength in a short time. However, measurement and monitoring of the strength of concrete in the initial phase is a tedious job and costly affair. Due to stress, there is a formation of microcrack that leads to weakness of the structure. In this paper, a simple inexpensive capacitive sensor is designed and fabricated for the measurement of stress for the pressure range of 0–1 MPa. The variation in stress during the hydration of cement concrete causes a change in the thickness of the dielectric layer of the sensor leading to a change in capacitance value. With an increase in compressive stress, the capacitance value increases, while, in tensile stress, the capacitance value decreases. The maximum sensitivity of the sensor used for concrete stress measurement is 28.8 pF/MPa.

摘要
