Thermal Analysis

Thermal analysis in the context of cement and concrete involves the use of techniques like differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential thermal analysis (DTA) to study the physical and chemical properties of these materials as they change with temperature. These techniques are crucial for understanding the hydration reactions of cement, the formation of phases during heating and cooling, and the effects of temperature on the mechanical properties of concrete. By measuring changes in mass, heat flow, and energy absorption, thermal analysis provides insights into the thermal stability, decomposition temperatures, and hydration kinetics of cementitious materials. This is especially important under severe environmental conditions where temperature fluctuations can significantly affect the performance and durability of concrete structures (Scrivener et al. 2004).
