Retardation in the context of cement and concrete refers to the delay in the setting and hardening processes of cement when exposed to severe environmental conditions. This phenomenon is primarily influenced by temperature, humidity, and chemical additives. At lower temperatures, the hydration of cement, which is a chemical reaction between cement and water necessary for setting, slows down significantly. Similarly, high humidity can alter the rate of water evaporation, impacting the curing process. Various chemical retarders are also used deliberately to control the setting time in complex construction scenarios, allowing for longer workability and adjustment times.
