Reinforced Concrete Beams

Reinforced concrete beams are structural elements designed to bear loads, primarily bending moments and shear forces. The mechanism behind reinforced concrete involves embedding steel bars (reinforcement) within the concrete to handle tensile stresses, as concrete is inherently weak in tension but strong in compression. The steel reinforcement is placed strategically within the beam to optimize the structure’s ability to withstand loads without excessive deformation or failure. Under bending stress, the lower part of the beam experiences tension, where the reinforcement is typically located, while the upper part handles compression.
