The pH value, a measure of acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0 to 14, is crucial in the context of cement and concrete as it affects various chemical reactions essential to the material’s integrity and durability. Freshly mixed concrete typically has a high pH due to the presence of calcium hydroxide, a by-product of the cement hydration process, which can range from 12 to 13. This high pH environment is necessary for maintaining the passivation of embedded steel reinforcement, thus preventing corrosion. However, the exposure of concrete to acidic environments can lower the pH, leading to the dissolution of calcium hydroxide and ultimately causing the depassivation of steel, which accelerates corrosion rates. This is particularly concerning in severe environmental conditions, such as industrial settings with acidic emissions or coastal areas where salt spray is prevalent, as these factors can significantly reduce the concrete’s service life.
