Organic Acids

Organic acids, such as acetic acid, formic acid, and citric acid, often encounter concrete structures through environmental exposure or industrial processes. These acids can aggressively interact with the cement matrix, leading to chemical degradation. The primary mechanism of degradation involves the reaction of these acids with the calcium components of the cement, leading to the formation of water-soluble calcium salts. This reaction not only reduces the concrete’s pH but also weakens the structural integrity by dissolving the cementitious binders. The acidity of the environment can accelerate the leaching of calcium hydroxide from concrete, further increasing its susceptibility to damage.
