Air content in concrete refers to the volume of air space incorporated into the cement mix, typically through the intentional addition of air-entraining agents or as a natural consequence of mixing ingredients. The primary purpose of introducing air into concrete is to enhance its durability, particularly in environments subject to freeze-thaw cycles. Air-entrained concrete is more capable of withstanding the stresses caused by the expansion of water as it freezes, due to the presence of microscopic air bubbles that provide space for the ice to expand without cracking the concrete matrix. This technique is especially important in colder climates where concrete is exposed to severe weather conditions.
