Expansion-cracking in cement and concrete refers to the cracking that occurs as a result of the material’s internal expansion. This phenomenon is typically caused by various factors such as alkali-silica reaction (ASR), sulfate attack, freeze-thaw cycles, and thermal expansion. Each of these factors can cause the concrete to expand beyond the tensile capacity of the material, leading to cracking. Expansion-cracking significantly compromises the structural integrity and durability of concrete structures, making it a critical concern in construction, especially under severe environmental conditions.
