Creep

Creep in cement and concrete refers to the time-dependent deformation under sustained load. This phenomenon occurs as the concrete undergoes gradual strain, which can lead to changes in shape without an immediate increase in stress. The mechanisms behind creep involve the movement of water within the cement paste and the viscoelastic behavior of the hydrated cement matrix. Microstructural changes, such as the sliding and rearrangement of C-S-H (calcium silicate hydrate) particles, contribute to this process. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and the type of load applied significantly influence the rate and extent of creep.
