Carbonation

Carbonation is a chemical process where carbon dioxide (CO 2) from the air reacts with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2) in the concrete to form calcium carbonate (CaCO 3). This reaction occurs throughout the concrete’s pore system and can affect both the aesthetics and structural integrity of concrete structures. While carbonation reduces the concrete’s pH, it also densifies the concrete’s microstructure by filling pores with CaCO 3. Initially, this can enhance the surface hardness and potential durability of the material.
