Activated Binder

Activated binders are materials that exhibit cementitious properties when mixed with alkaline activators. Unlike traditional Portland cement, which hydrates with water to form calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), activated binders involve a chemical reaction known as geopolymerization. This reaction typically involves aluminosilicate materials such as fly ash, slag, or metakaolin, which are activated by alkaline solutions like sodium hydroxide or sodium silicate. The significance of activated binders lies in their potential to reduce carbon emissions associated with cement production, enhance the durability of concrete, and utilize industrial by-products, thereby promoting sustainability in construction. Activated binders are particularly valuable in creating concrete that can withstand severe environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, chemical exposure, and aggressive weathering.
