Biomaterials

The mechanisms through which biomaterials influence the properties of cement and concrete are multifaceted. Primarily, biomaterials can act as natural fiber reinforcements, pore fillers, or even catalytic agents for new mineral formation. For example, natural fibers from bamboo or sisal can increase the tensile strength and crack resistance of concrete by creating a more dispersed stress distribution within the material matrix. Similarly, biopolymers such as alginate or xanthan gum can modify the rheology of cement pastes, improving workability and water retention during curing. On a molecular level, biomaterials often promote biomineralization processes; for instance, bacterial production of calcium carbonate can lead to enhanced densification and sealing of pores within concrete, thereby improving its compressive strength and durability under environmental stressors.
