Recent advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the emergence of highly sophisticated digital content authoring tools have largely facilitated the design and development of educational materials for second and foreign language teaching/learning. The number of language learning apps which are offered in online app stores has been surging over the past decade. A careful review of the available digital materials, namely, the apps designed for language teaching/learning purposes, however, reveals that the requirements of instructional design are, by and large, ignored in their development. The problem is intensified in the case of the apps which are designed for teaching and learning less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) including Persian. The present chapter features a systematic review of the design features of the available Persian language learning (PLL) apps in online app stores. After categorizing the existing apps based on their language focus and system features, the extent to which the design of PLL apps is pedagogy-driven (i.e., grounded on relevant theories of technology-enhanced language teaching and models of instructional design) is explored. Identifying the gaps in the design and development of the existing body of PLL apps, the chapter ends with a detailed discussion of the design requirements for PLL apps and their pedagogical implications.

摘要
