Acquisition of Discourse Markers by Second Language Learners of Persian in the Study-Abroad Context
摘要
As discourse connectors, discourse markers (DMs) are prevalent in all languages and lead to natural speech. They function as linguistic items that link units of discourse. Despite numerous studies focusing on the textual aspect of DMs, there have been fewer studies investigating the acquisition of DMs by second language learners. To address this gap, this chapter provides empirical data on the acquisition of Persian DMs by non-Iranian learners of Persian as a result of their study abroad in Iran. The chapter explores the cross-sectional acquisition of DMs by learners across proficiency levels. The findings show the meanings and interpersonal, referential, structural, and cognitive functions of the most frequently used markers by two groups of learners, namely, beginners and advanced learners.
