Metro has been popular mode of public transport in major Indian cities especially in the metro cities over the recent decades. However, due to limited area on the surface and with growing population, the existence of metro tunnels came into reality. This allows smooth functioning of metro from one point to another with significant decrease in the travel time. Currently, only some Indian Cities have underground metro systems which include the cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Chennai. This paper firstly presents the historical development of tunnelling works as per the records from the ancient past till the modern age and then explains the future scope and research needs of metro tunnel projects in the current scenario in the country. It also discusses some important metro tunnel projects executed in India and emerging technologies in the construction of tunnels. Further, data from different sources are collected to perform graphical analysis to understand the future of metro tunnels in India and their utility in the country, in order to support the study.
