Assessment of Overbreak Control in Weak Rock Masses Using Forepoling Method: A Case Study of Headrace Tunnel of Khimti-2 Hydroelectric Project, Dolakha and Ramechhap, Nepal

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the spiling/forepoling method in controlling crown overbreak and the impact of groundwater on tunnel stability in weak rock masses. The objective of this study is to assess the use of spiling dowels/forepoling in weak rock mass to prevent crown overbreak, and to determine the optimized forepoling design parametrs, and to show the impact of groundwater. The research also contributed to the development of longitudinal deformation profiles, offering valuable insights into how rock mass conditions influence deformation behavior under wet and dry conditions with varying groundwater level above the tunnel’s crown. This comprehensive investigation demonstrates the effectiveness of spiling/forepoling in controlling overbreak and provides practical guidance for optimizing design parameters and improving the overall stability of tunneling projects in weak rock masses. This study provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of the spiling/forepoling method in controlling crown overbreak and the impact of groundwater on tunnel stability in weak rock masses. The findings of this study can be used to optimize design parameters and improve the overall stability of tunneling projects in weak rock mass and offer guidance for similar projects in weak rock mass conditions.
