Benefits of Directional Controlled Blasting Technique for Stabilization of Problematic Rock-Cut Slopes of Konkan Railway

Stability related issues and reconstruction of infrastructure slopes have become more prominent in recent years for sustainable transportation route. The different mountainous transportation route in India as well as worldwide are experiencing failure of slopes in the form of boulder fall and landslide. These failures often cause accidents and traffic delays. Due to this reason, Railway often regulates the train movement by speed restriction from top speed of 110–30 KMPH and deploys watchmen at vulnerable cuttings to avoid possible train accidents and minimize potential damages. The speed restrictions at several locations adversely affect the train movements, their punctuality and fuel efficiency. Thus, the removal of unstable rocks on slopes is necessary for the sustainable railway transportation. To exterminate the problems permanently, re-profiling of the slope is required. The re-profiling works using novel directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique has been successfully implemented at many problematic sites of Konkan Railway to acquire long term stability. Considering significant enhancement in safety standard of Konkan Railway route in terms of utmost safety of trains and travelling passengers, many other operational benefits have been achieved as compared to cost of excavation of unstable slopes. This paper highlights the benefits gained by the railway in terms of time in the speed restriction and fuel savings at such four cuttings apart from maintenance-free long-term stable redesigned slopes. It also eliminates permanently the chances of rockfall/slope failure over track or trains which may lead to an accident. These safety measures enabled the railway to enhance operational capability by increasing the number of trains on this single railway route to achieve higher output and facilitate better societal services.
