To study a dialect, we should first investigate and transcribe the dialect. Before embarking on the investigation, we should formulate the plan and the outline according to the investigation’s purpose, select the interviewees, i.e., informants, and then start to transcribe the dialects. We can only begin to describe, analyze, and study a dialect after we have a written record of the corpus. It is not easy to record or list the facts of a dialect faithfully and accurately as it requires not only a general knowledge of linguistics, but also specific knowledge and special methods of dialectology. Chao Yuenren once said: “If you go to a place at random and walk around to listen and take notes of dialects, the value of what you get must be equal to or less than zero, because it is better to have no records than many wrong ones.”
