The field of participatory qualitative research with children and young people (henceforth children except when focused on young people) has made rapid strides and is expanding to take global and decolonizing perspectives. It assumes some knowledge of qualitative research and introduces the distinctive features of its application to children. This chapter is designed for those starting or improving their research craft with, rather than on or about, children’s worlds. Contrasting framings of childhood provide a theoretical underpinning. More detailed methods illustrate practical ways for research. Finally, practical guides illustrate how researchers are solving emerging problems. Along the way, examples and reflections provide methodological detail, without describing the complete studies and results. Ultimately, improved health equity, social justice, and planetary equity are important because the status of children is a sensitive indicator of society’s values.
