Influence of Socioeconomic, Cultural, and Ethnodemographic (SECED) Factors on Dental Education and Clinical Practice
摘要
Dental education forms the foundation to train and equip oral health professionals to meet the diverse needs of the global population. Clinical competence alone does not make a successful dentist. While clinical competence is very important for a dentist, a well-rounded education in clinical dentistry should aim to produce a composed, well-adjusted professional, fit for the job of looking after the oral health-care needs of a diverse population. The effectiveness of dental education is largely influenced by a range of socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnodemographic variables, including socioeconomic status, ethnicity, age, gender, access to education, and the language of communication. Therefore, addressing the above dynamics is critical for creating inclusive, patient-centered dental care models and fostering a culturally competent oral care workforce. Additionally, these variables can create disparities in the opportunities for dental education, student performance, career choices, specialization pathways, and clinical practice. The chapter also focuses on cultural competence, access to education and oral care, curriculum design, and emerging trends in dental education and clinical care related to changing demographic factors, technological advances, mental health concerns, and other unanticipated challenges.
