The currently available devices for artificial ventilation (ventilators) are expensive and require trained manpower for their use, thereby limiting their use to intensive care units and specially equipped ambulances. This limits their use for the transport of patients when ventilation is needed for a short period of time and during pandemics when mainstream ventilators fall out of supply or cannot be used due to lack of trained manpower. During these times, AMBU bags can be used to provide ventilatory support to critically ill patients. Most of the time, AMBU bags are used by patients’ attendants, resulting in inadequate and improper ventilatory support for patients, along with psychological trauma for attendants who are providing end-of-life care to their loved ones. Accordingly, we planned this research proposal to design an easy-to-use, affordable and automatic AMBU-bag operating device. After many efforts, we succeeded in designing a device for the transport of sick patients as well as for providing short-term ventilation to critically ill patients in the absence of either well-equipped ventilators or trained manpower, which is being presented in this chapter.
