Community Tourism: A Solution to Revitalizing Local Economies in Vietnam’s Rural Regions
摘要
Even under the peril of a global pandemic, the unchanged demand for travel has shown that it is an essential human desire persisting regardless of their environment. Therefore, we should find a way to make vacationing as sustainable as possible without compromising the experience of travellers. This paper investigates the factors and measures that can facilitate sustainable tourism, characterized by positive economic impacts on local communities, preservation of cultural heritage, and limited negative environmental effects. The study focuses specifically on the tourism industry in Vietnam, with an analysis of Sapa and several rural villages in Dien Bien Province. The findings highlight the presence and growth of a locally driven, community-based tourism industry in both examined localities. It becomes evident that these small-scale, entrepreneurial ventures play a significant role in fostering a sustainable tourism industry. While community-based tourism did not substantially impact environmental and infrastructure aspects of sustainable tourism, it largely fulfilled the economic and social criteria. The research methodology includes interviews with community leaders, tourism industry leaders, locals, and individuals working in the tourism sector. Additionally, surveys of local inhabitants in Sapa and Dien Bien are conducted to gather relevant data. Overall, this research sheds light on the positive impacts of community-based tourism in Vietnam and provides insights into fostering sustainable tourism practices that balance economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.
