Long Non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in Abiotic Stress Adaptation

Plants being sessile, need to develop strategies to respond to variable environmental conditions. They have evolved various complex mechanisms to identify and activate signaling pathways at various stages of their development. Recent studies suggest epigenetic changes including DNA methylation, miRNA, and lncRNA play important roles in plant adaptation in varying environmental conditions.. The long non-coding RNAs are more than in 200 nt in length and have provided a new insight into plant adaption. lncRNAs regulate the plants’ responses at epigenomic and chromatin reorganization levels, transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Various lncRNA are functionally characterized having roles in plant growth and developments like regulation of flowering, development of lateral roots, and different abiotic stresses. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques have enabled the plant researchers to discover various lncRNAs and their roles in plant biotic and abiotic stresses. lncRNAs are known to be involved in various abiotic stresses, like excess heat, drought, cold, salinity, and CO2 stress. We have briefly described the role of lncRNAs in plant abiotic stress responses and their future aspects in agriculture.
