The Rohingya are a predominantly Muslim minority in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, which has experienced historical marginalisation. This, however, got worse as a result of severe communal riots in 2012 (Human Rights Watch, 2012). The crisis reached a critical point in 2017 due to aggressive military crackdowns. It forced over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh (United Nations, 2017).
